What do our freshmen think about their English proficiency?
Amy CHUI
In an orientation workshop for new students, I asked the participants to fill in a short questionnaire about their English proficiency. May I take this opportunity to share the results with you:
- About 50% of the students rated their current English proficiency as satisfactory; however, as many as 40% considered their English poor.
- One-third of the students thought that they didn't have adequate English skills to cope with their studies in HKCC, and over 40% had no idea if their English skills were adequate or not.
- The skill that the students were most confident in was reading (31%), followed by writing (24%) and listening (23%).
- The skill that they were least confident in was speaking (33%), followed by writing (28%) and listening (24%).
- Nearly one-third of the students claimed that they enjoyed listening in English the most; another 28% chose reading as what they enjoyed the most.
- As many as 40% of the students felt fear when speaking in English; another 33% feared writing.
- When asked if they planned to spend extra time outside classes further developing their English language skills, more than 75% said "yes".
- About 40% of the students suggested that they wanted to improve their speaking skill the most, whereas about 30% wanted to improve their writing.
I hope this little survey can help you understand more about our freshmen!
