Have you ever attended the CPCE Research Luncheon Seminar? If yes, you may have the feeling as mine --- attending the seminar is really like having the refreshment during our busy college life. In fact, it is an enlightenment. I appreciate that the Cluster of Business offers the chance for us to exchange the ideas with eminent scholars such as Professor Huang Xu of Management and Marketing Department of PolyU. He is a passionate scholar and always strives for knowledge. Publishing 4 articles in either grade A journals or grade B journals a year is never a challenge to him. He loves research.

In the seminar, Professor Huang shares his works of 6 current research projects. One of them is about abusive supervision. If you attended his seminar on Mar. 2. 2015, you should remember that he was particularly excited in sharing the general characteristics of abusive supervision as shown below.

Thanks Professor Huang for allowing me to share this picture in our bulletin. He mentioned that when his Master students read this power point slide, they were particularly interested in finding whether their bosses are abusive supervisor and have similar characteristics. Will you do the same thing as Prof's Master students? Then, let me repeat the characteristics of abusive supervision again:

  1. Ridicules me
  2. Tells me my thoughts or feelings are stupid
  3. Gives me the silent treatment
  4. Put me down in front of others
  5. Invades my privacy
  6. Reminds me of my past mistakes and failures
  7. Doesn't give me credit for jobs requiring a lot of effort
  8. Blames me to save himself/herself embarrassment
  9. Breaks promises he/she makes
  10. Expresses anger at me when he/she is mad for another reason
  11. Makes negative comments about me to others
  12. Is rude to me
  13. Does not allow me to interact with my coworkers

If you encounter a suspected abusive supervisor, definitely, this is not a happy experience. On the other hand, what will happen if our students perceive that their lecturer has similar characteristics? Undoubtedly, this is not the enjoyable learning experience. As a result, you are highly recommended not to behave like an abusive supervisor. Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself!
