“Passion. Connected” is the official slogan of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. The host city name of PyeongChang is comprised of two Chinese letters with the meaning Peace (“Pyeong”, 平) and Prosperity (“Chang”, 昌). The slogan “Passion. Connected” was derived from the two initial capital letters “P” and “C” of PyeongChang1.
- “Passion” implies a very strong feeling, affection and something one is fond of. PyeongChang is a place of global festivals that inspires each other and symbolizes a place where Koreans share their warm affection. It also expresses the Olympic spirit and the warm heartedness of Koreans.
- “Connected” means to link, join, combine, bridge, and understand. PyeongChang is a place where all generations can participate and inspire each other anytime and anywhere through Korea’s innovative technology and cultural convergence, and it means opening a new horizon for a new beginning, a harmonized world and the Olympic Winter Games.
The slogan “Passion. Connected” is also applicable to teaching as good attributes.
Teaching with “passion” has demonstrated positive outcomes in learning activities2:
- Good teachers are passionate. They have positive personalities and practise good teaching skills.
- Teachers with strong passion are energetic, compassionate, engaged, and concerned about students.
- Teachers who are passionate about what they are teaching will inspire students and get students interested about what they are learning.
Teaching is also “connected” with the scholarship of integration by facilitating the transformation and extension of knowledge3:
- Teaching is about building bridges between theory and practice, and communicating one’s knowledge effectively to students.
- Teaching also has strong connection to scholarly activities in order to stay current about the knowledge delivered.
- Collaborative work with colleagues in different academic disciplines could bring new insight to original research areas and discover patterns that connect.
“Passion” and “Connected” are two meaningful qualities of good teaching. It is the “passion” that reminds us that teachers have a meaningful and important role to play during the growth of students in the “connected” world of knowledge.
Wishing that we are all passionate and stay connected!
