Four year-two students of Higher Diploma in Social Work, namely Guan Leyong, Kwok Shuk-man, Lau Chi-yan and Wong Wing-yan, received the Guiding Star Scholarship Award 2020/21 sponsored by Drs Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation. The scholarship is administered by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service, and co-organised by Hong Kong Social Workers Association. The award aimed to encourage social work students to earn further development opportunities and cultivate resilience.

The theme of this award cohort was elderly service. One of the awardees, Shuk-man, shared her views on this topic with the panel members in the interview, "Some people may be reluctant to serve the elderly because they think this type of service is boring. However, in the practicum, I found that many senior citizens are active and willing to learn new things, such as how to use WhatsApp or Zoom. They will keep practising until they can master the new skills. I really enjoyed the time I spent with them."

Shuk-man felt the award recognised her potential to be a social worker. She planned to spend part of the scholarship on further studies. "I would like to study expressive arts therapy and narrative therapy because they are both interesting and effective in helping clients to face their hardship with confidence," said Shuk-man.
