Before joining HKCC in 2005 as a college lecturer and the Programme Leader of the Associate in Applied Social Sciences, Mr Andy Fong has been a long serving staff member of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for 16 years.
From 1989 to 2005, Mr Fong was associated with PolyU's Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS), first as a Lecturer, then an Assistant Professor. Over the years, he has accumulated extensive and rich teaching experience in the subject areas of social work, social policy and administration, and sociology. In addition, Mr Fong also played an active role as an education administrator in APSS, where he was the programme leader and fieldwork coordinator of undergraduate and sub-degree programmes as well as the leader and coordinator on departmental promotions, school marketing, and student exchange programmes. He also participated in the department's Learning and Teaching Committee, Departmental Research Committee, and Student and Alumni Affair Committee.
Mr Fong received his Bachelor of Social Sciences from The University of Hong Kong. Then he worked as a social worker in the arenas of outreaching youth service, youth centre, and labour service for 6 years. After finishing his Master of Social Sciences in Urban Studies, he embarked on his academic career by joining PolyU (then known as the Hong Kong Polytechnic). Mr Fong is a registered social worker who sometimes performs, on a voluntary basis, consultancy and service development work for some non-government organisations.
With academic interests in occupational welfare and occupational social work, labour and manpower policy, career counselling, macro-intervention in social work practice, urban studies, and social development, Mr Fong has conducted research on urban housing, occupational social services, unemployment, and job retraining. He has also been a consultant trainer on counselling skills for labour officers in the Labour Department, and the consultant facilitator of the Passenger Liaison Group of the Kowloon Motor Bus Co. Ltd. for over 10 years. Mr Fong has published over 15 referred articles, book chapters, conference papers, research reports, and monographs.
