Dr Xuan obtained his PhD in Systemic Functional Linguistics from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2015, MA in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Sun Yat-sen University in 2009 and BA in English from Huizhou University in 2006. His research interests include English and professional communication, healthcare communication, systemic functional linguistics, adolescent second language writing, discourse analysis, teaching Chinese as a second language, curriculum design and materials development, as well as research synthesis and meta-analysis in applied linguistics studies.
Dr Xuan has extensive teaching and research experience. His teaching interests include Analysis of English Grammar, Discourse in the Profession, English Grammar and Language Education, Second Language Writing, all levels of courses in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. He has been teaching at secondary and tertiary levels for many years locally and internationally. Locally, prior to joining HKCC, he has been a visiting lecturer and research associate at the Department of English, PolyU for more than two years. Internationally, he was a visiting researcher at Georgetown University in the US for more than a semester in 2012. He taught a Chinese summer course at Indiana University in the US in 2008. In addition, he has participated in lots of research projects on L2 writing studies, L2 Chinese materials development and healthcare communication studies; he has also presented and exchanged his research findings at international conferences with researchers from all over the world.
