Dr Michelle Mao earned her bachelor's degree in Chinese Language and Linguistics from Peking University. She then obtained her MPhil and PhD degrees in Humanities (Linguistics) from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Dr Mao's major research fields are Linguistic Typology, Cognitive-Functional Grammar and Chinese Dialects. She has presented research papers in academic workshops and conferences.
Dr Mao was a research consultant in the Center for Chinese Linguistics in the Division of Humanities at the HKUST and played an important role in building up the Early Cantonese Tagged Database.
Since joining HKCC in 2014, Dr Mao has been responsible for teaching and developing Chinese related subjects, such as Chinese Communication for College Students, The Structure of Modern Chinese, and Putonghua for Cultural and Communication Purposes. Currently, Dr Mao is also a member of the Academic Counselling Team of the Associate of Arts programme.
