Dr Mao Sheng earned her bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Linguistics from Peking University. She then obtained her MPhil and PhD degrees in Humanities (Linguistics) from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Dr Mao’s major research fields are Linguistic Typology, Cognitive-Functional Grammar and Chinese Dialects. She has presented research papers in academic workshops and conferences.

During her period of study at HKUST, Dr Mao was a teaching assistant for various humanities-related courses. She once served as a teaching assistant coordinator to provide necessary support for the teaching assistants in the Division of Humanities. She was also a research consultant at HKUST from 2009 to 2012 and played an important role in building up the Early Cantonese Tagged Database.

Before joining HKCC as a full-time lecturer in 2014, Dr Mao was a visiting lecturer at the College for two years, teaching Chinese Communication for College Students, Putonghua for College Students and Business Putonghua.
